Daejeon's Tteokbokki Spot: Right There (feat. Ice Cream Tteokbokki)
'Daejeon, the center of Korea! It's known as a no-jam city, but there's a tteokbokki restaurant here too.'Right there' There's a saying that there's no one who hasn't tried it, but there's no one who has only tried it once. Ice Cream TteokbokkiIce cream and tteokbokki, two words that don't seem to go together, and you're probably wondering what they mean, so let's go check it out together!
Daejeon is home to more than 10 tteokbokki chains. Can't you tell how intense the flavor of Tteokbokki is just by looking at the number of chain restaurants in a small city? The flavor is similar in all of the chain stores, including the main store. In this post, I'm going to talk about the taste, cleanliness, convenience, food philosophy, and cost-effectiveness of the 3 Dunsan branches I visited and tasted.
Ice Cream Tteokbokki Flavor
First of all, the sauce is very thick and thick. I tried to ask the boss what ingredients go into the sauce, but failed. (Is it a foregone conclusion?) The sauce tastes creamy and makes you wonder what it is when you first taste it. I don't know if it tastes like powdered milk or if they melted real vanilla ice cream and added it to the sauce, but either way, the flavor is unusual. It's also a little on the sweet side, not spicy to say the least.
The rice cakes are chewy but soft because the main ingredient is rice, and unlike tteokbokki, the center of the rice cakes are hollowed out so that the sauce can go well with the filling. However, if you eat it like the specialty of Daejeon, Seongsimdang's fried soboru (ttuso), you will get tired of it quickly. If there's one thing I'm disappointed about, it's this.
Cleanliness and convenience
The first thing I thought when I entered the store was that it was neat. Everyone will think that the floor and table top are well maintained. However, if there is a regrettable point, the items used in the store such as tissues are displayed all over the restaurant as you can see in the photo. So, I think it may be a little uncomfortable for aesthetics.
It seemed like a good idea to have a separate window for takeout service, similar to a coffee shop, so that customers don't have to come into the store, and to have a kiosk at the entrance to reduce wait times, along with ordering directly at the counter in case of a rush.
Food philosophy and value for money
It's been in business since 1980, which means it's been around for over 40 years, which is a lot of time for a restaurant to open and close, right? I think it's safe to say that 40 years of tradition says it all.
It used to cost 3500 won, but now it costs 6,000 won for one tteokbokki.(What? How much? Did I hear wrong?) Maybe it's because the price of food has gone up a lot since the corona, but it's a bit burdensome, right? Basically, when you order tteokbokki, it comes with a combination of rice cake and oden. You can add additional tteokbokki, egg, and oden. The unique thing is that the sauce is delicious, so if you ask for sauce, you can add sauce, but you can only add sauce when you order tteokbokki. Many people eat the crispy handmade seaweed rolls with the sauce.
About your restaurant
As mentioned above, as you can see in the map below, there are more than 10 chain stores in Daejeon, so the bar is very popular. The operating information such as business hours is slightly different for each branch, so it would be good to check it out through the phone. If you are traveling to a tteokbokki restaurant, you can go to Yongjeon Branch if you come by bus, and the main branch (Gwangdong) if you come by train.

Organize
It is arguably the best tteokbokki restaurant in Daejeon. If you are visiting Daejeon, we recommend you to visit this place along with Sacred Heart Church. It's a bit pricey, but it's popular with both locals and out-of-towners. If you're in the area, I highly recommend trying the homemade fried rolls dipped in ice cream sauce.
